I think you should clean it up anyway or hire someone to do it. It's your house too.

Hoarding can sometimes be a symptom of depression or mental illness. It may not be as simple as deciding to be messy.

Not sometimes: Always. It's a form of OCD. Get your wife to a therapist, ASAP!!! Use another reason if you have to.

What if she's not willing to go to a therapist?

Then intervention is required. If the OPs adult kids have a good relationship with her, their help and support will be needed along with a therapist.

When she leaves the house, clean it up. Now you may get an angry reaction, but stand your ground. Its your house too.

intervention and therapeutic help will not work as she doesnt think its a problem and says its none of my business, leave it alone, close the doors if it bothers you. , if a major fight ensues and divorce a threat whenever i mention the issue i guess i'm stuck with it,sorry for bringing up the issue, just needed to rant.
PS. this is just one room depicting what i'm talking about, the whole house is in similar chaos.=

To keep the peace, would it be possible to let your wife have one room or floor? Like say the basement can hers to hoard as she sees fit but the kitchen and bathroom and front room need to always be clean and straight.

This has worked for two couples I know. Both get their way and they shut up about the other's habit...as long as it is in the designated area.

I'm sorry for you OP. I have compassion for your wife, she likely can't help it. (also for you too! sorry for you)
