There's a small hole-in-the-wall rental car place just a short walk up the street from the ferry pier in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. It's called GANE Rent - a - Car. It's near the bus station and the HSBC bank.

Avoid them at all costs.

After paying cash and returning my vehicle with gas and on time, with my credit card on file in case of damage, they charged me $500 USD. So much for my $45 1-day rental.

I disputed the charge, and thought that would be the end of it. Then, suddenly, I started getting random fraudulent charges racking up on my credit card that my bank flagged (thank goodness). I had to close out the account.

GANE Rent a Car has now provided documentation in the dispute. Thus , I'm still in the dispute process, and am worried that the bank can't do anything about this fake charge.

To add insult to injury, the car was awful. It's was a dinged-up red Hyundai with high mileage and a manual transmission. They pointed me toward a gas station down the street, which I pulled into. The gas station attendants strangely guided me toward a specific pump.

The man pumped my gas. I gave him a 500 peso bill for the cost, and then he dropped it on the ground. (I didn't see it.) He then pulled out a 50 peso bill and said I needed to give him more...

So I gave him another 500, but then realized I was short by ... 500 pesos! I sat there and tried my best to ask him about the money in Spanish until he leaned over and picked up my 500 peso bill from the ground and returned it.

I think all these people are in collaboration or something. See the red car? Yeah that's a tourist. Milk him for all he's worth.

Shameful city. I hate Playa del Carmen.

Oh yeah, and the one night I stayed in a hotel there I got bedbugs. That made for a terrible next day.

Cozumel was amazing, however...

Default Gane rental car fraud

Gane Rental Car
Ave Juarez MZA 088 LTE. 04
Playa Del Carmen, Q Roo, 7101256
(RFC OGG031113ELA... perhaps this is a business license?)

Gane charged me $155.04 beyond the $45 cash I paid and I am very angry. I filed a complaint with the better business bureau (please do the same, it's bbb.org but don't trust me, look it up yourself). They forged my signature on receipts two days after I paid cash. I am working with my credit card company, but it doesn't look good. I let my condo company know and I am spreading the word. I cannot find a phone number.

I was also recently ripped off by GANE. A 'deposit' of 8,000 pesos was not returned and because I inputted a PIN number and the way they wrote the receipt it is proving difficult to get. I am currently exploring the criminal charge route. Any other advice?

Hi, exactly the same happened to me and my girlfriend when we were there in december 2013. They chared 700 USD on my VISA although we payed already in cash.

We discovered this and blocked the bank account but it was too late.

They countered our claim with false accusations that we returned the car with broken gear box but of couse this was a lie.
NEVER rent a car there!!
