I have traveled the United States extensively but have never visited another country. I want to visit Mexico but am fine just visiting a border town. I'm just wondering which one is the best for a day trip...somewhere where I can experience a bit of shopping, dining and culture in general.
I visited El Paso-Juarez a few times but that was before the
drug cartel murders problem that peaked about 5 years ago,
I heard it much better now.
I've driven over to Juarez and walked over the bridge,
walking you don't have to worry about driving in Juarez
which can be nerve wracking, parking can be a problem too.
Walking across downside is you can't see as big area.

Vacation in San Diego, which has the best weather, beaches and diversity of all the US border cities/regions, and either visit Tijuana for a big Mexican city, Ensenada for a Mexican port city or Tecate for old Mexican pueblo feel.
Otherwise, I would probably stay at a resort in South Padre Island, Texas and do a day trip to Matamoros or the smaller Nuevo Progreso.
Border towns do not represent Mexico....I have been to many and they all suck. PS: I lived in Central Mexico for 5 years and am anxious to return to that part of the country.
The OP lives in NC, so they're probably going to fly to a border area....better to invest a bit more time and money and go somewhere nice in Central MX (or a small non-resort beach town in winter).
I wouldn't be flying. My husband and I take cross-country driving trips twice a year, so we would be driving.
I thought about visiting El Paso and Ciudad Juarez when we were traveling in Texas in July, but it was sort of a last minute decision, so we didn't have enough time to get passports.
I like the idea of visiting San Diego and then Tijuana.

Don't you mean that you drove to El Paso and walked over the bridge? Isn't leaving a car parked in Juarez, risky?
Not a border town but Monterrey (Mexico's second largest city with plenty of activities and dining options) is only a 4 hour drive from San Antonio.
Maybe give that a go for a better "slice of life" approach.
