I'm fortunate to work from home so I'd really like to move to the south eastern coast of Mexico. I'm wondering how reliable the power is and what internet speeds are like. I'd be grateful to hear from people living there.
We are in Central Mexico (Lake Chapala) and we have traveled all around Mexico. Internet speeds vary widely not only from area to area, but within cities and villages. In many public areas like parks and plazas, there is free internet. In all of our travels around Mexico for 10 years, we never were anywhere where there was no internet, and we've been to a lot of off-the-track areas.
At our home we have access to TelMex which is the Mexico-wide land line company (like Ma Bell in the US, back in the day). Their reliability is very good, but speed varies a lot from location to location, but has improved since we first came to MX in 2007. We also have internet from the local cable company; it is much faster but it's reliability used to be bad, though that's much improved.
We considered dropping TelMex but frankly with the monthly costs of both so low with the current peso:dollar exchange rate, it still makes sense to carry both.
What city you plan to live? That´s important, if is a big city like Puerto Vallarta you can have Telmex Infinitum (DSL or Optical Fiber) Axtel (OF) or Totalplay (OF) most people say Megacable has a bad service, but the first 3 had good reviews.
Location can be everything. I've lived in small city where I had fibre optic and amazing internet. I've also had very poor internet which could not be upgraded. As for power, I think that depends on whether you get major storms in your area, like hurricanes. I'm getting a generator for that very reason.
