The point of my post is: if Mexico is such a great country, why did millions of their people have to flee?

Exactly the opposite. Mexico ranks in the top five countries in the world for crony capitalism.

None HAD to flee. Most Mexicans went to America temporarily for the quick buck, intending to return to their families. Spend some time in Mexico and you will meet plenty who went back.

Millions and millions of them in US have no intention of returning. Where have you been living, under a rock?

If Mexico was so great, they would not have to come to the US to make a quick buck. Fact is millions do not return, have no intention to. Mexico's economic situation has driven millions to the US, legally and illegally, and many even risk their life to do so. That is not I would exactly call a "great" country.

Millions of overseas workers go to Saudi Arabia, too, but by that by itself does not make KSA a better country than the countries they came from, which have plenty of expats who, for some reason, have left the USA.

That was decades ago, and many are moving back upon realizing the US is the largest Ponzi scheme on the planet.
This is also the reason a million US retirees now reside in Mexico:

Silly comparison. Almost none of them go to the Middle East to be a resident. They are not immigrants. They go to work for a Western employer to make big bucks for a few years then return home. They live in secured communities. Few bring their kids. Almost none of them are illegal.

Go to America make some money than go back home=== a great plan.

I plan to retire either in Mexico or New Mexico ( Albuquerque).

Most likely will be south of the border. I am a USA citizen. With inflation and my $1650 a month pension plus SS it simply does not add up to a healthy retirement in the State at all. Donald Trump is building a wall to keep USA people In!!

I am leaning towards Tijuana to retire to. I am Chinese and there are numerous places to buy Chinese groceries there and its next to San Diego. How awesome is that to have a great USA city within walking distance ( if you are in shape).
