Going to watch Baja 1000 in November. Flying in to S.D., then rent car, then drive to Ensenada. What kind of drive is this? I understand there's a toll road. What to expect? Any tips / hints? Thanks.
Roads are being worked on and should be almost complete by November. It's a beautiful drive. If possible, have someone else drive because you'll miss some of the most outstanding scenery in the world.
Tips? Bring your patience as there could be lots of traffic around that time and under these conditions things could move slowly.
Hints? Bring your courtesy and respect. Mexican people don't mind if you are nervous, they'll help you out but they do sense if you don't care and are arrogant. It means a lot here.
Be absolutely certain that your rental contract specifically calls out that you are permitted to bring the vehicle into Mexico. It is ILLEGAL to bring a rental car to Mexico if it is not permitted by the rental car company. The vehicle could be taken away and given to the Chiefs daughter or someone.
Be absolutely certain that you purchase a healthy automobile insurance policy from a MEXICAN insurance company BEFORE entering the country. This is an absolute must and I would NOT enter the country without it.
Of course I assume you've not been here before, at least I couched my answer that way. Mexico is a wonderful place but remember you ARE in a foreign country.
