Great post! Miami has the largest population of Spanish speaking Jews in the US. Oh, and it is not just a 'Sephardic' thing. Many Ashkenazic Jews (from Chile and Argentina especially) speak Spanish in Miami. One of the Rabbis I took classes with in Hollywood, FL was fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew, Yiddish and of course English. And yes, he used all of those languages on a regular basis living in South Florida!

I told a Jewish accountant in Pittsburgh that Miami has an entire Cuban synagogue (Beth-Shmuel) on Miami Beach after he ranted about his son's new Cuban girlfriend who 'claimed' to be Jewish (which he didn't believe apparently). I thought he was going to fall off of his chair.

Shoana

There was a "Jewban Neighbourhood" in Collins, MB. A few blocks. I don't know if they still live there.

Living in South Florida, I can attest that the majority of employers in Miami Dade county are searching for bilingual employees.

It is not entirely impossible for people who speak English only to find employment----it is difficult though.

Miami Dade County is close to 70% Hispanic, and a significant number of its residents speak Spanish only. If you are not bilingual your employment opportunities drastically decrease. This is not a social commentary or opinion----it is very factual.

If you are moving to Miami Dade County from anywhere else in the United States you need to be thinking about Spanish---it is what it is.
