Money can't buy taste.

An iconic 1920s Miami-Spanish mansion is set to be demolished and replaced with a 14,000sqm McMansion- out of scale and lacking taste:

Board delays decision on Miami Housewives’ plan to raze Star Island home - Miami Beach - MiamiHerald.com

Why does a childless couple need two huge houses?

On one hand I see the historical value of the home.

On the other hand I see that it's private property and if the citizens and city wished for it to have been preserved they were just as capable of buying the home and doing such, or making laws such as what other cities have done in which homes can be declared historic without owner permission.

And on a philosophical point, why is Degarmo's work so highly valued over other people? We're talking only only 87 years of history here. I know homes that were built way before 1925 and were some of the first homes in an area (not SoFla) and if they were gone tomorrow nobody would care. Because some people think Walter Degarmo should be preserved that should make everyone stop and preserve everything he's done?

I'm torn on the issue. I guess in an ideal world I would like to see the Hochstein's offer to sell the home to a preservation group and if they refused to purchase it then they could tear it down.

I don't see what is so famous and historic about this house. It's too late to save it. Whether plans on new home will be allowed or not is another story. There the city can have some say. But really what is special about this home? Not that old. Haven't read of anyone famous living there so really who cares.

It's not like it is on a busy street for tourist to see. Let them do with their land what they want especially since e home is in horrible condition now anyway.

I say screw it and demolish the house. Most of Miami's more important history has been demolish, one house isn't going to matter in fact most people won't even notice or care. When you seriously think of it it is their house and they are the ones that pay taxes on it so they should do as they please.

If we say oh well its only one house or one building each time, we won't have many historic/older buildings left. It was so refreshing this summer when I went to europe to saw all these old buildings. I went into a city hall from the 1200's that they still hold their city council meetings in. I think it really depends on how bad shape the house is in.

I am actually being sarcastic, I enjoy old buildings and feel that they should be preserved but unfortunately in Miami history is overlooked.

Miami is one of those cities you have to care for or love in order to see it as historical worthy.

It really is sad people don't see the good in preserving the older homes. They have way more character than any of these track homes built the last 10 years.
I love driving past that old stone house on the corner of 17th Ave and Bayshore.
