Aventura is an upscale area made up mostly of jewish and venezuelan people It is not suburban and is made up mostly of luxury high rise condos and townhouses. If you are looking for a house than look elsewhere. Coral Gables is not very liberal it is mostly conservative. I don't think Coral Gables is gay friendly but than again I doubt anything will happen, you will just be out of place. If you are looking for a home close to the city and the beach look into Miami Shores. It is close to a ghetto but it is still a good incorporated area. Miami Beach is another option but it is further from the city and more expensive. The pluses would be very liberal, gay friendly and obviously closest to the beach.

Hey there - we are a gay couple with twins that considered moving from Brooklyn to SoFla several years ago. You can see our original post asking just about the same questions here:

//www.city-data.com/forum/miami...i-ft-laud.html

In the end, we ended up not moving. South Florida may be heavily Democratic, but it does not feel terribly progressive. I have spent a lot of time there, esp in Ft Lauderdale, and there is simply not a presence for gay families. Lots of gay people and gay retirees, but not families with kids. All that said, I think there are plenty of areas where you would do just fine. I would recommend staying away from the traditional hotspots of South Beach and Wilton Manors, which are not geared to families.

You do not need a gated community unless you like living in that kind of cloistered environment. If you're concerned about safety, just find a nice neighborhood. Personally, I wouldn't touch a gated community with a 10 ft pole.

In Miami, try Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, North Beach, Miami Shores. In Ft Lauderdale: Lauderdale by the Sea, Dolphin Isles, Victoria Park.

South FL is very open and pretty liberal and accepting of gays, lesbians, etc, however you will find there is not that gay family-life down here really. The gay scene is very much geared toward the younger 20-something club bunnies and than the older gays who are retired. Gay families such as yourself are few and far between.

As far as nice area that are safe....with perhaps gated communities. I would suggest Weston, Coral Springs, Parkland, Boca Raton, and possibly the western periphery of broward, places like Sunrise, Pembroke Pines, etc.

Gays are found un masse in Wilton Manors in Broward County. If there was ever a "homosexual" city, well that be it. They had a amazing candy store I used to go to over there. I only throw that last bit out to show I am familiar with the area, and trust me, that place is as Gay as they come. If Wilton Manors was a person, it's name would be Liberace.

[quote=ruski;32953760]You will probably like For Lauderdale. In your price range there are some very nice choices in good areas.

How does Pembroke Pines stack up with our needs?
