We're a young professional couple in our late 20s and are considering moving to Miami. We love urban life, restaurants/bars/beaches.

I am potentially looking at a job that would involve two locations: Cutler Bay and South Miami near 70th st. I would be spending a few months at a time at each spot.

What's the bet location to live with a very reasonable commute(<30mins) if we are interested in a lively/safe area?

South Miami is a great spot as it has a bunch of restaurants, bars, shops, etc. You can easily catch the expressway off US1 down to Cutler Bay or take US1 all the way to Cutler Bay, either way you'd be going against traffic from South Miami. South Miami is lively and safer than many other parts of Miami. You could also look in the downtown dadeland area, as there are a bunch of apartments around that area.

We live in cutler bay northern end of it whispering pines section and really like the area we are in, you see lots of families with golf carts riding around, folks around the lake (we are right behind it) say hi to dog walkers and folks just strolling around, the place has a smaller town feel sort to it. We have plenty of shops, small restrurants and outlets but they are all on us1.

The problem with cutler bay is the traffic during rush hour on us1 can be bad. I work once a week in doral area and Kendall area and even going through side roads it can take me about 30 to 45 mins. Hubby works in downtown so he takes dadeland station to gov center and his total commute time door to door is about 60 to 70 mins.

South Miami is nice with some areas that are a bit sketchy but that is small, also downtown south Miami is nice but limited to say small section.

It will also depend on what budget you are looking at, we picked our area because we could get a better house on what we were willing to spend then palmetto bay and the taxes were lower. We are in our early 50's so schools were not a consideration, although big changes are coming to this area since they have a new middle school and are working on a new high school.

Is your job in cutler bay or south Miami? 70th street is more south Miami area.

Agreed with doggiebus on South Miami. It has a small downtown area with the ameneties you are looking for plus farther north up US 1 you have Coral Gables as well as the Kendall area to the south.
Cutler Bay is more of a bedroom community and very suburban .

South Miami would be better in this respect.

South Miami would be your best bet, that is from someone that loves where she is living at now. Then again we want sleepy town feel and for anything else we will drive but keep the hectic away from us.
