We're relocating to Florida, husband will be working around Coral Gables and I'll be working in south Broward County (a few different locations, hours 8am-5pm). We have 2 small children. We'd actually love to live in Coral Gables, but I'm concerned my commute would be unbearable, although I hear it's the reverse commute so maybe it wouldn't be terrible?

So, 2 questions:
1) How bad would it be to commute from Coral Gables to south Broward county?
2) Where else would you suggest we live? We're looking for family friendly, possibly walkable, no real budget.

Miami Lakes, Miami Shores are much closer to south Broward and offer some of the most family friendly neighborhoods in Miami-Dade County and their cheaper than Coral Gables.

If it's southwest Broward vs. southeast Broward it would make a difference in where it's best to live commute-wise. Anything in the north part of the County (Doral, Miami Lakes, Miami Shores), and it would be very heavy traffic getting to Coral Gables. Reverse commutes are generally easier, but can still be unreliable due to accidents.

One thing to consider: will you be the one dropping the kids off on the way to/from work? If so, you may actually want to live close to your work. If it were my wife and I, I'd probably be inclined to live in one of the newer areas of Miramar or Pembroke Pines (better value housing and supposedly schools too up there) and take the express bus or Tri-Rail in to Miami, and transfer to the Metrorail or whatever bus goes by the job in the Gables. There are busses from the airport Tri-Rail that go through the heart of the Gables, as well as the Metrorail and Coral Gables trolley bus service. Either that or see if he can leave really early to and from work.

Thanks for the replies.

Neither of our jobs has a fixed location. We'll each have different sites we have to go to within a few mile radius, which makes public transportation impossible.

Regarding the kids, our intention is to have a nanny, although I still wouldn't want to be too far away.

We've been checking our Miami Shores. Looks like that might be the best option for us!

This.

My husband and I live off Las Olas and his commute to Coral Gables is anywhere from 75 minutes to three hours each way depending upon the time of day. The only time it is under an hour is when he is driving home at 3AM.

You would not be doing a reverse commute.

The commute is heavy both ways but heavier going south in the morning and north in the afternoon.
