Husband and I are seriously thinking about flying into Miami and driving south to perhaps Key West. We are in our 50s and have never been to Miami though we've been on vacation to Tampa. Any insights to being safe and smart in Miami? Is the Miami airport easy to find and exit to main expressway?

We'd appreciate any insights you have.

When I was commuting daily to work, hardly a day would go by that I wouldn't slap my forehead in disbelief at what I'd seen a driver doing. Expect people (their cars) to pull out in front of you....almost daring you to hit them. Expect people to run red lights.....don't drive through a green light as soon as it turns green. Wait and look in the other directions to be sure no one is going to run the red. At four way stops - be very careful. Hardly anyone uses their turn signals, so don't assume the car directly across from you at the intersection is going forward, they often are making left turns. I live in south Miami-Dade County and feel that the further south you drive, the less craziness in drivers. Once you are in the Keys, it should mellow out some. Just be alert, don't drive aggressively, and enjoy the Keys!

If you are not used to driving in the city, don't -be it Miami, Orlando, Tampa there are over 50,000 cars driving in a 15 mile radius at all times. and a lot of them are tourist and have no idea where they are going.

The op mentioned that they were flying to Miami then driving to the Keys (Key West).

I would seriously consider taking the commuter plane to marathon and then taking the bus line to key west if you are not really going to be staying in Miami.

If driving, stay on the freeways if not staying in Miami. However, you can drive safely if (a) avoid rush hour, (b) drive very defensively. You will find people in the inside landed going 15 mph slower than the traffic flow, not looking when merging, etc. just be careful.

Now, watch the traffic signs on the freeways very carefully. There is an odd exit to US 1 that goes to the keys. You can end up in downtown Miami instead.

But be sure to go tour South Beach with its art-deco buildings, etc.

Why? The drive down the Keys is beautiful. Lots of great places to eat, interesting places to shop. I would include The Rain Barrel, in the Plantation Key area, The Green Turtle for a meal, and Bass Pro Outlet at Worldwide Sportsman in Islamorada. Don't forget to try Key Lime Pie and the local's favorite Conch.

Do it, but if you rent a car make sure you get Sunpass for tolls. It's a beautiful drive from Miami to the Keys, well actually when you get to the keys it's a beautiful drive. Yes the airport is off of a major highway. Just head to the Florida Turnpike and follow signs to the Keys, Once there the only way to go is south or north, so it's easy.
