Bob, can you give us a little more info? How old are the folks visiting? Are you outdoorsy? artsy?

I do think everyone should go have a tour of Wynwood. The mural art there is just fun.

If you like fine art, there's usually a good exhibit at the Perez Art Museum in Downtown as well.

AnnRyan, Early 50s couple, more outdoorsy than artsy. Although art in the context of say historic churches would be of interest.

By Wynwood, I assume that is a neighborhood, correct.

If 1960 is your birth year, I have some sad news...
Not to worry. You're not alone. I'm boarding that same boat.

Miami's modern history doesn't go back much more than 100 years so historic is a relative term. That said, there is a Spanish Monastery you can visit. It was purchase, dismantled and brought to the U.S. by William Randolph Hearst and eventually made its way to Miami decades later. Here's a link:

You could do an Art Deco tour on South Beach, visit The Barnacle (a historic house and example of South Florida's vernacular architecture) in Coconut Grove, the Coral Castle near Homestead. There is a beautiful church at Lincoln Road mall that is worth a visit, designed by Florida's first registered architect and is the first church built on Miami Beach. Sadly, they have sold part of the property to be turned into more shops (I don't know if/when construction is to begin). Lincoln Road itself is a nice place for a stroll. It's a pedestrian mall that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Coral Gables has The Biltmore, a luxury hotel that is a National Historic Landmark. It was once a hospital during WWII and is said to be haunted. They host events where they share ghost stories and do a tour. I haven't done the story/tour, but I think it would be neat! But I have stayed there and sad to report that I met no ghosts.

I know there are so many other beautiful, historic sites our city has to offer... I will come back and post more if I think of them. Enjoy your trip!

The lighthouse at Bill Baggs State Park on Key Biscayne (home of Miami's most beautiful beaches, IMO).

Freedom Tower, a National Historic Landmark described as "the Ellis Island of the South"

The Venetian Pool in Coral Gables reopens in March. It's built from a coral rock quarry and is fed by water from the aquifer below. It was built around the 1920s.

Vizcaya, Deering Estate, Arch Creek Park (ghost tours!), Greynolds Park and the Ancient Spanish Monastery. Zoo Miami is worth the trip if the weather is good.

^ Zoo Miami which is a "cageless" Zoo is great at this time of year due to the weather but just prepare to spend more than half a day there.
The Art Deco Walking Tour is worth the time if you are into Architecture that defines a city and region. You will not find another city on Earth with this concentration of Art Deco in the world.
