I have visited downtown Miami several times over the last few years. I will admit it really looks run down compared to other major cities I have visited and most places in Florida I go to. I only really go for Calle Ocho (which I love!!!!!!), but honestly I just get in the night before and get out the day after because even when there for a few day extra to walk around and explore it just seems shady ex dark, gloomy and run down. I have never personally had any problems when visiting the city, but have been watching some shows that really paint Miami as a very crime ridden dangerous place. Of course tv shows are not always factual. Do local residents of Downtown Miami feel the crime has decreased over the last 3 decades or is it the same or worse?

It's your personal perception. We've been in and about downtown...business, transactions, entertainment, escorting foreign relatives and friends. Yes, we saw homeless, beggars, same as any other major city and more here with dense tourist traffic.

Which parts of Downtown do you hang out, anyway? Under the expressway parking lots and empty areas at 3am?

It's a major American city. No surprise, there's a decent amount of crime. But as long as you're smart and don't do anything reckless, there's pretty good odds you'll be fine.

If you take up selling drugs, or live in one of the seriously violent neighborhoods, well..... the odds are going to change.

Downtown and Calle Ocho are two different places.

Calle Ocho is fine. Downtown after Wynwood is another story. But Downtown near Bayside is really secure, in my honest opinion.

Depends where in downtown you go. Brickell seems to be fine, the CBD still empties out fast and has a tremendous amount of homeless people, except for Bayside market. Outside of downtown Wynwood gets pretty scary, which makes sense since it's a hip hood near the ghetto. I'll tell you this, from 2001 till now, the area has vastly improved even though there's still some spots here and there that haven't.
