I'm heading down to Miami for a wedding the 4th of july weekend and have extended it into a short "vacation". I was able to get a great deal on a hotel in downtown miami, the Courtyard Miami Downtown at 200 SE Second Ave. A friend of mine who has a condo down there said that isnt a great area to be...probably not too safe and definitely not a good area to be for walking. Anyone else have anything to say about that area and/or hotel?? I talked to the person who got me the deal on the hotel and they were slightly offended i'd even question that area and felt it was a great place to stay.....anyone have any comments on the area and/or hotel?? Thanks!!!

There is construction going on in that area Met2 and Epic condominiums and a vacant lot across the street from Courtyard Marriot where hopefully Met3 will rise.I see it as a safe place as there is just office, condominiums and hotels in that area and if you cross the Miami river you are in the beautiful area of Brickell, which is the Financial District of downtown Miami. Brickell and Miami Avenue are your main streets in that area as there is Mary Brickell Village(most popular area) on Miami Avenue for your dining and after hours entertainment..

Its a really busy area for most of the day but after the sun goes down you can easily head towards the Bayside/Bayfront part of Downtown and it'll be packed or go south of the river to Brickell and it also has busy spots with plenty of bars and restaurants.

That area around the hotel has a lot of construction like noland said, they're building office and hotel towers there. It's really busy during the day but that specific area of Downtown is pretty dead at night. It's not unsafe though.

If you walk east of there towards the river or Bayfront Park, there's a lot of restaurants and people and if you cross the river into Brickell, there's tons of people and movement. You can walk around Brickell safely with no problem. Miami Avenue and Brickell Avenue are the busiest, but the whole area is really, really nice.
