I was watching the news last night and because of the wet foot dry foot policy they get to stay here permanently. Is this usually common?

I think most of the Cubans coming here are not fleeing Castro rather they are flocking to a different lifestyle that they cannot attain in their own country. Whether Fidel is gone, a new type of government is set up or whatever, you will always have Cubans migrating to South Florida...

Why have economic conditions suddenly changed? That is the reason most people come here-- to escape poverty in their home country. I can't blame them for trying to get out but I can blame our politicians for giving them the extra incentive of wet foot dry foot policy and for underfunding our coast guard in their efforts to defend our shores.

Hunger. That's the main reason they risk their lives to get here. I mean hunger both physically and emotionally. Aside from food, people want to have nice things/possesions. Communism might seem like a peaceful and fair system through equality, but it doesn't take into account one of the most basic human needs. Greed; and the will to do better than your neighbors. It also stinks to go to school for 8 years to become a doctor and make the same as Joe garbageman. That's why communism will never work. Ultimately, it oppresses the people to starvation. That's why they come here.

How often do cubans arrive at are coasts? On a daily basis. Its just, some don't make it to U.S. shore, they either die on the way here or the coast guard stops them in the water and then they are returned to Cuba. Those that make it to land stay.

As far as the Haitians go, they get the raw end of the deal. They get sent back to Haiti either way, no wet-foot-dry-foot policy for them. People from both countries are suffering. There really shouldn't be two different laws. Either they are all allowed or not allowed in on the same policy. I really think this law for the cubans is unfair to any other person coming to this country. My mom did her paper work and became a citizen a few years ago. I don't understand why Cubans are any special than a Haitian, Mexican, or any other person for that matter. Yet they get a free pass, sort of speak if they get to U.S. soil.

Thanks for the response. I agree, the wet-foot-dry-foot policy is completely unfair as many people live in worst conditions and it should be changed soon. In fact, I don't even know why it's still around. What makes the Cubans and more oppressed than Venezuelans, Haitians, etc.

Another question, is there data that shows how many Cubans actually come to the U.S. and stay? I wonder what the influx numbers are of Cubans arriving to our country.
