There is NO WAY I would have a house in Florida without a screened lanai (and I have had two houses built in Central Florida). First, it keeps 99% of the bugs out, likely the few that do get in are from people coming in and out the doors. Second, the pool STAYS clean, third, the screening cuts 10%-20% of the sun's UV rays, and there is a notable difference in air temperature inside, vs. outside, the lanai, a major plus in the brutal sun here in FL, fourth only a fool would walk barefoot on St. Augustine grass; it feels as stiff as saw grass and harbors bazillions of fire ants and their nests, and if you've ever been bitten by only just one, you know why you ALWAYS closed shoes walking in the yard. My opinion.

My mom calls them chicken coops and hates how they look,I don't think they're that bad but don't love them.

I'm not a huge fan of them and the screens get damaged easily, not to mention they're pretty ugly. I think mostly houses built in the 60's had them here and when they got damaged in storms people just removed them entirely to avoid dealing with them.

However, I still see a lot of condos with screen porches. If I had a screened porch (especially with a CBS base or frame) I would most likely try to convert it into a room with windows, which many people in Miami have done.
