I believe the Roads are the houses that you see off of S.Miami dr. (the one with all the date palms, I believe it is S.Miami) when you are on your way to downtown.

I live in Broward now. So if I am headed down 95 right is it the area to the left just after downtown?

Yes, but only when Coral Way is SW 3rd Avenue (from I-95 to SW 12th Avenue). The Roads neighborhood ends as soon as Coral Way curves and turns into SW 22nd Street. The neighborhood is called "The Roads" because instead of N-->S avenues and W-->E streets, The Roads has NW-->SE "roads" and SW-->NE avenues. It's one of the only areas in the City of Miami that is not part of the traditional street grid. There are some beautiful streets in The Roads.

That is a beautiful drive, the SW 3rd avenue corridor... Graceful and with the nostalgic splendor of a bygone era. There might be an occasional crackhead straying too far from downtown, and the area might be underserved by the City of Miami police. But that is minor.

If I bought a single family home anywhere that close to downtown Miami it would have to have a bada$$ alarm system in it. Maybe even a couple large German Sheperd hounds straying loose in the back yard...

Where do you live now, Cuba Libre? Maybe you should move to The Roads... I have even heard people speaking English there!

Yes, that's it. Also from SW 11th St to SW 1st Ave.

I have walked or biked through this area any time of day or night without any need for concern. There are occasional house break-ins closer to Calle Ocho and an occasional car break-ins from closer to Broadway. Nothing major, though.

When I first came to Miami, I made it a point to route my travel through this area as there are beautiful streets (I like the Blvd at 13th, alot....).

Now, I know why it's called the "Roads." Thanks.

When you live here, it's amazing how many people you meet that actually like it here and choose to live here (or move back in many cases)! It's an interesting, unique and in some ways an amazing city. Not for everybody and not my perfect city (I don't love it), but I'm always glad I live here (well, almost always ).

Yes, that church is in The Roads neighborhood. This is well within the area where the streets run diagonally instead of N-->S and W-->E.

Dr. Rico, thanks so much for this post. I really think you have given an objective perspecitive and it seems that your open attitude toward life and people has really benefited your stay in Miami. Do you still miss BVc?
