I am trying to move to Florida and get out of the north due to hating cold weather, hating the cost of living, and being underpaid. Before anyone starts with the whole "they pay you much less down here" statement let me explain my situation. I have lived in PA, NJ, and now DC. I am 25, have a masters degree in education, and on my past two jobs have only made 24k and now 28k. I took a job as a coach at a university here and jobs in this industry pay absolutely HORRIBLY. I have certifications to teach in FL, but I know that most of the school systems are not hiring or even laying off hundreds of teachers. As far as other work experience, I have worked security and bartended at bars, have worked as a construction laborer, and have worked customer service. If I am looking to move to Florida, what would be a viable option for employment? The only plus side to my position I have now is benefits, but with the cost of living in DC I am barely breaking even.

I would say try using Monster.com and all of those websites. Wikipedia lists all the companies that have headquarters in Miami, so you can also go the companies websites and check the open positions. Since you already made up your mind, just be opened minded, and take any job until you find a better one. I honestly think you shouldn't be a problem if you know how to pass an interview. It can't get any worse than working as a security guard at a bar. I know sales and customer service are always hiring.

Sorry man teaching jobs are hard to come by... If you are not going to teach you are pretty much in the same boat with the other people who have burger flipping degrees (political science, sports medicine, psychology, anthropology, etc...)

IT seems to be hiring fairly well, in the mid to upper level positions...

I hear you though man, I lived in the DC/Metro area my whole life and just moved to Jacksonville a month ago... I too hated the cold weather and the high cost of living... I also felt like I was underpaid, and I was... I lucked out and got a job down here making more money than I did in MD... They say the salaries are lower down here and they are but not proportionally... The average cost of living calculator puts the cost of living at 100%+ higher in MD than most parts of FL... The salaries however, are definitely not 100% higher...

Just keep sending resumes out and see what you can find all throughout FL... Just don't move here without a job locked down...

Certified in Physical Education and Health and I'm thinking of possibly trying to get whatever else I can (possibly a Spanish certification or maybe a history because these would be ones I could maybe do quickly). I am also certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, which I needed to be a college strength coach and I can also do personal training with it, although I despise personal training.

Why don`t you become a police officer in San Francisco?

The starting salary is $100,000/year. You have a master, you`ll get all the supplement salaries and benefits.

The outlook in Florida is very bleak right now, sorry to say. The economy there is really in a slump and the cost of living/housing is still very expensive in all the major metro areas--especially Orlando and the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami areas. Many Florida cities are dependent on the tourism industry (especially south Florida) and people simply can't afford to do much traveling or vacationing now. My mom's cousin is a Florida resident who lives in central Florida and gave us this info--as we have been interested in relocating there. Having stated that, teachers are, of course, always in demand.

Now that is a really ridiculous comment about applying to be a police officer. Police officers are notoriously underpaid and SF Bay area has the highest cost of living in the nation. So that would not be a logical option for someone trying to escape the high cost in another metro area who already has a teaching degree and wants to move to an area with a lower cost of living. The Bay Area has a higher cost of living. Unless of course he wants to make the two hour commute from Tracy, Manteca or Stockton every day.

MDCPS is not hiring full-time teachers (all the positions are temporary).

Um no your wrong. They are not always in demand. My sister was a teacher and I have a few friends who are teachers and they all said the pay sucks especially if your single and or the sole financial provider for your household. Plus most teachers tend to get fat from sitting at the desk all day.

Matter of fact (which carries more weight then matter of opinion) is that 400 teachers just got layed off from there jobs here in South Florida.

Teachers firings: Broward County School Board votes to fire nearly 400 teachers -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com

You speak of Floridas economy, which you know about from your moms cousin....How is Californias economy? Last I hear the state was bankrupt and out of money and laying off State workers.

Teachers are underpaid as well considering the constant stress of the job, and the amount of planning that goes into it. Teachers just starting out are paid the worst, but of course money goes further if someone else is paying all the bills in the house, but if your the sole provider teaching doesnt pay that well. Probably make the same as a manager at Walmart.

If anyone wants a job that is truly always in demand then become a nurse.
