I'm about to sign a lease with a condominium, but they ask me to go to a local police department and get a background check...

First, is this a common request for apartment rental?

Second, I'm staying in Hyatt Summerfield Suit (5710 Blue Largoon Drive, FL 33126) now. Which police department is local to me? I've searched google map, and two closest ones are:
(1) 2200 W Flagler St, Miami, FL 33135-1523
[(2) 2801 Salzedo St # 1, Coral Gables, FL 33134-6682

My workplace is in the zip code 33134. Does that qualify me using the station (2) as above?

Or 'local' means I have to go back to my home state and get a police statement??

I've never heard of such a thing, it sounds outrageous. If anything, it should be the responsibility of the landlord to do that if he so desires. Frankly I think it speaks volumes of just what kind of person you will be renting from. Maybe I'm way off track, but IMHO, big red flag dude!

just to clarify, it's the requirement of the condominium association, not the owner...

background checks are perfectly normal, BUT....they should be asking you for your info, requesting a fee and doing it themselves...not making you go to a police dept. That's kind of strange.
