I'm going off to college next year and I'm probably going to go to Michigan Tech. I have recently learned that Houghton is right next to the Edge of the Earthâ„¢ and I realized that I need to update my winter wardrobe. While winters in Wisconsin can be harsh, apparently they're nothing compared to winters in the UP.

Anyway, my questions are, which coat brands can I count on to be warm, high-quality, and not look too bad? Does it get cold enough in Houghton to warrant a Canada Goose? Also, more generally, what other winter-wear will I need besides the obvious jacket, gloves, hat, etc.?

Thanks for the help!

Taa daaa....recent discussion.

If you're used to Wisconsin winters, I don't know that you'll need to update unless you spend a lot of time outdoors.

Was colder the week before Christmas in Altoona Wisconsin than at Rapid River Michigan.

See what people wear that live in Ashland where the temps are about the same as Houghton.

If you're outfitted for Wisconsin and are used to being outside during the winter there, you'll be perfectly fine with what you have when you move up here.

If you find you want something warmer after you've arrived, you can make your purchase locally. It's not a big deal

Make sure your vehicle can handle the snow.

Just use the same items you wear in Wisconsin.

Despite the media hype Michigan winters aren't too much harsher than Wisconsin winters. Houghton does see a lot more snow (from lake effect), but the average temperature is pretty much in line with what you've experienced in Wisconsin. This is because moisture from the lakes tends to keep the entire state of Michigan warmer in the winter than surrounding states.

You might want some extra thermal layers. I don't see anyone wearing any special brand of coat. Ski gloves are a good idea.

If your able to stay warm in Wisconsin you shouldn't have a problem in Houghton. Houghton will likely be more harsh in cold and snow, but I'm sure you don't plan to stay outdoors long during most of the winter season.

Do not try to wear a Canada Goose. You will end up looking silly and the goose will probably bite you. They can be mean.

My favorite winterwear:

Longjohns made of polypropelene and wool. They are so nice and warm. I have the Duofold brand from Campmor, but I think they changed the name. Just look for a combination of polypropelene and wool.

Also, a down comforter is THE BEST at night. I don't have a real comforter, just a down sleeping bag, but it is like having a cloud of warmth over you.
