Interesting trends based on the latest census data:

See which Michigan counties lost population, and which grew, based on new U.S. Census estimates | MLive.com

The whole thumb and Eastern "seaboard" of Michigan seems to be emptying out and moving West.

If only we could encourage people in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne County to have more kids like they do in Kent and Ottawa counties =)

That has a lot to do with it.

Baby boom: West Michigan leads Michigan in population growth via births | MLive.com

But people tend to have more children when the economy is good.

Thanks for breaking all that down BoomRShine!

Old vs new industries / businesses.

The classic heavy industry and traditional high tech hardware places continue to wind down, the places with biotech / pharma and service / knowledge industries grow.

We've seen this on a smaller scale out here. Steel mills, auto plants, major metal fab, electronic hardware, etc, have all left / gone BK / outsourced / offshored, meanwhile places doing pharma, aps, Web 2.0 are doing some hiring (but not enough to offset the decline of more traditional industry).

I don't think it's so much births (or deaths in the liberal aka progressive counties) but the relocation of many from liberal to more conservative counties.

What about out-migration of younger families out of Michigan to other states over the past 10 years? The 2010 Census update shows this pretty clearly as more younger single people and families left the state during the 2000-2010 time period.
