So basically people say "There is nothing to do!" Those people must not like going outside, roll around in the snow, fish, hunt etc.!

How are the creepy crawlies (insects) in the summer?

I haven't spent enough time outside of Michigan to be able to give any kind of comparison. Most people that I know from Michigan who go down to Florida usually complain about the bugs though? So I imagine it isn't as bad as there.

This thread is old but taking a shot...

Any updates on the area?

How easy or hard is it to cross to Canada to go to the mall or Home Depot?
How hard is it to come Back through customs with what you've bought??

Does the SOO or Canada SOO have a YMCA? Is there a local
Library with children's story time and other "park and Rec" like activities for kids under 6?

What is the cut off age to start school?
Where I live now you have to meet certain requirements to attend preschool(so most kids don't get to go) And be 5 by Sept 1 to start kinder.

We have a Children's Musesum Chuck E Cheese and the library story time for entertainment. Not much. So something similar would be nice

Many people just live on the Canadian side and commute. Tip: get a NEXUS card to help deal with the PITA that the border is. You'd be amazed how many people have no idea what it is.

No one seemed to properly address the original posters question about bugs, so I will put in that the bugs across the whole Lake Superior range are horrible. I would still move there, but in case you are wondering...

It's been eight years since I lived in the U.P., but I doubt the school age has changed. A child must turn five by December 1st to be enrolled in kindergarten. I believe many schools also have an early five program for those who are eligible to start kindergarten but may be a little young for their age.

So mosquitos and fly, especially the black aka biting flies are bad in the summer?

Do they disappear after the first freeze and reappear in the Spring?

How is the fishing? Do the lakes freeze and people ice fish? Are there head boats or just charters? Do many people own boats?

Lastly what is the deal with snowmobiles? I hear it is obligatory to have one because without it you're stuck. Any truth to that?

I've heard about people moving to the UP because they visited up there during the summers and loved it. So, they decided to move up there. Anymore, people work from home and can live about anywhere. However, once they moved there...to get away from it all...they hated it. They hated the winter time because they had no peace due to the constant roar of the snowmobile engines ALL NIGHT LONG.

Deer flies. Oh yes. TONS of them. TONS of mosquitoes, too. Deer flies are not thwarted by the use of Off Deep Woods either.

I'm from southern MI and never lived in the UP but like to visit in summer and fall. Have lived near Dayton for the last 10.

Michigan in general is much cloudier than Dayton. Generally speaking Dayton is sunnier and less humid with a more balanced 4 seasons with much milder winters. Winter in the UP will be dark as well as super cold, super snowy and super long.
Spring/early summer is very very buggy. Winter does not kill black flies, mosquitos, no see ums, ticks. Wish it did. Probably the worst thing about the UP for me. Was up at Whitefish in June and we only got out of the car for a few minutes before the mosquitos drove us back in. You can wear lots of bug dope (not sure that even works for black flies) or wear net hats and gloves. April May June are to be avoided
Its a long way to a major airport. You have to take a small plane to a hub which adds on a fair amount expense to any air travel.
Its a long long way to drive anywhere.
Stores are limited and its a long drive to any others.
Don't like your doctor, dentist, auto mechanic? Need a big hospital for a major medical event? Its 4 and a half hours to Grand Rapids, the nearest big hospital. Its 3 hours to Marquette which has the biggest hospital in the UP. Good for many things but probably not others like cancer. Hm.

These are the things that stop me from moving to the UP. Because I really do like it there but just don't know if I can hack it full time.
