Every place I considered - Asheville NC, Florida, New Mexico, Oregon, had tradeoffs of some kind. Grand Rapids is a nice town. Can't really speak to jobs, but there are some good websites for job searching depending on your skills.
Most Detroit suburbs have the neighborhoods you describe - somewhere. A lot depends on your real estate needs. The current Detroit-area locals have more up-to-the-minute life experience there.
Ahhh west Michigan, apologies. I've been in the city forever, a change would be nice with access to city life. I think I've narrowed it down to troy or grand rapids, i think lol. I'm reading a little negativity on diversity in both cities as I am in a biracial relationship with children as well. We don't go "out on the town" much but we are very outdoorsy. I'm a CNA and Admin assistant so i'd need to check out the job market a bit. I would like to go live back in Detroit but i have heavily been advised not to by ppl who actually lived & live there and are trying to vacate asap. Michigan looks amazing I cannot wait to come back. It's just tough when you have no idea where you're going exactly. Leap of faith really

I am considering moving to Troy and curious to hear what you mean by "negativity on diversity" about the city. Is it just demographics or more overt types of behaviors/attitudes? Don't have children and my fiance and I will be moving for to the area for work.

If you don't need big-city cultural amenities but are "outdoorsy" Detroit's western suburbs should be a good location. Plymouth, Northville, Livonia, etc, are within easy reach of a bunch of recreation areas as seen on this map. Just check the job market.

I grew up and lived 30 years in the suburbs and lived in South FL as well. I have a friend who lives in Troy and has a bi racial child and has been happy living there. In my opinion even in areas that many years ago lack diversity they have really come a long way today. In my neighborhood growing up there was no diversity but now there are people of all races and though I am not going to say they are the majority I do feel everyone is friends and gets along. I went to Birmingham schools and if I had children would want them to go to that school district. I also know people who went to Bloomfield Hills, West Bloomfield and I have heard Novi area has good schools as well.
There are many nice retirement communities, hospitals, medical centers that seem nice to work for since you are a CNA. What is your price range for a place and what are you looking for? Have you went online to the hospitals in the area to see what type of pay and opportunities are available?
Good luck with what you decide

Good to know DaniellaG. Does Troy have a number of apartment complexes? It sounds like a decent place to start looking for a place to live. Do apartment complexes typically have exclusive garages/car ports for tenants?

I am not that familiar with Troy apartments since I did not live in that area but I used to shop at Somerset Mall which is a very nice mall and I recall passing apartments near there and also depending on budget may like Birmingham. I think Birmingham is nicer and less congested. Most apartments have car ports and some have garages but less common. I really encourage you to get a carport even if it is an extra fee cause winters are much harder without one in my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback. Birmingham is also definitely an option since it looks like it's just next to York. At least a carport (garage is definitely preferred). When does apartment hunting typically start in that general area? Here in NYC, apartment hunting is usually done within a 2 week span since the market is so competitive deals are closed within 1-2 days. I assume it is less competitive in MI and I could probably call apartments at the beginning of August to see that they have available for the beginning of September?

I would start looking 30 days in advance. I was looking for a short term 2nd place and I was surprised at how many communities were filled and there was a wait list. Also how some places the rent was much higher then in the past.
Birmingham is a really nice area though most apartments there will be older so probably will not come with a garage. I would also look into a condo rental or call a realtor.

Meaning I've heard that is not culturally diverse... I've only heard. Everywhere you look you ONLY hear negativity about Detroit. I was there in May and it didn't seem unsafe or a zombie waste land like most people (media) are saying. I'm looking into East English Village too. I cannot imagine there being nowhere safe to live in the entire city outside the rich (i.e Bloomfield) area. Doesn't seem plausible.

Thank you so much for your response. Can you kinda give me a heads up how it differs up there from down here (taxes, commute, etc)? The diversity thing is good to know, as I said I going off what i'm being told, not taking it as fact tho We are trying to stay under $900 a month in the event I do not quickly find employment. Hoping to find employment before I get there and am looking into ways of doing so. I work as a receptionist and prefer that line of work but am open to both.
