I seem to recall reading that you have to register handguns (others?) by visiting a sheriffs office with whatever firearm/'s needing to be registered... Is this true/still so, and if so, is there any exemption made for FFL's (I have an 03)? Thank you.

When you pick up the gun at your ffl, they’ll fill out a purchase permit and you can mail or drop off a copy of that form at your local police/sheriffs office. They no longer do safety inspections, that law was rescinded.

You can avoid registration if you hold another state’s ccw/cpl/cwp when you make the purchase. There’s a special exemption in the law for those who hold another state’s concealed license. It’s bizarre, but it is what it is. If you do have one, just toss the local pd copy of your purchase permit in the trash.

Thanks Zippyman. How does it work for folks moving to MI from out of state, with handguns already owned?

You’re supposed to treat those like a private party transfer- get the purchase permits from the local pd & return them within 10 days I believe.. still no safety inspection & still exempt from registration if you hold a cpl/ccw/cwp in your old state.
