Coldcrotch, You are comparing apples and oranges. Michigan is a potato compared to California.
Homes will always be more desirable in Cal. than MI. any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Work pays much more in Cal. then in MI. Not to mention its economy is doing much better than MI. It also has much more to offer, better weather, natural beauty that beats MI hands down.
If you shop right and buy right you can be assured that your home will be of greater value in the years to come, where as in MI you can be assured that it will be worth less. Yes home values have dropped in Cal. but they most assuredly go up. Many people still want to live in Cal. Not to many people with brain activity want to live in MI. I think you need to see the wizard scarecrow, or at minimum a male/female escort. Your choice. I don't know or want to know your sexual orientation although I have my suspects that you drive a diesel in your fantasies at least. LOL

Winters aren't THAT bad, they're just kinda long. I found that cross country skiing does wonders for the psyche as well as keeping that winter "gut" from getting out of hand.

I miss ice fishing the most. I always had better luck fishing in the wintertime for some reason. And man, dem dere bluegills are mighty tasty comin' out of the lake in January.

March/April was the only "sucky" time for me in Michigan, as it was more like the end of winter than the beginning of spring.

Things WILL turn around economically, although it may take a while....

I've lived here pretty much my whole life. I have a stable job. My friends and family are all here. I like Michigan and I intend to stick around for a while.

Not ALL of the college educated young people are fleeing the state.

Michigan is a beautiful, charming, and wonderful place to live. The outdoors are breathtaking, the people are amazing, and the culture and diversity is broad and historic. The economy is very troubled in Michigan--moreso than other parts of the country--but if you have a job lined up and a plan B in case the whole Michigan thing just doesn't end up working out, I wouldn't hesitate to move. Michigan is an incredible place to live--despite all of the negatives you hear.

Oh...and the winters aren't really that bad. You learn to either get through it one way or another. Most Michiganders actually develop a quixotic love for the epic winters. Lots of sledding!

Funny everyone is mentioning the lack of sun. I once read Michigan was the 2nd worst to Seattle for actual days of sunshine.

The winter isn't bad at all, however it does seem long. However, I grew up in Western NY where winter was as long with more snow, it's all perspective.

I still say that Michigan has to have a plan for coming back. The auto industry is not it.
Michigan really has not much to offer anyone or business on a level that can even hope to turn the state around. It is loosing almost every bid on bringing in new auto business. Partly because of the weather and partly because of the unions. When you can set up a factory in Mississippi and hire people for 15 and hour instead of 35 and hour no wonder.
I also say no one goes to Michigan for vacations from outside the state or surrounding states in any numbers. And with surrounding states hurting as bad or worse then Michigan they can not even afford to visit.

Absolutely!!! Unfortunately he plan is still missing. The strength of the unions is like nothing else -- it has always amazed me -- they have done it to themselves.

I have lived in Michigan 42 years, I LOVE it andwill NEVER leave it. I DO NOT want to live in Cali...or any other *warm* state. I *shrudder * at the very thought.

I love ALL 4 season, Fall and Winter the most. I am not at a loss for things to do in the Winter, I do not find it depressing in the least. I find it exciting and invigorating...how can you be board with sking, sledding, snowmobling, ice fishing, snowshoeing, making snow angels, snowmen, snowball fights......the eternal return of Spring always puts a spring in everyones step and the Summers are warm with the most brillant blue skys and water on Earth. Fall brings the best of Mother Nature with her spectacular color show and frosty nip in the air.

I love this state and will never leave her. TO those who cant hack it here, I say go, find your paradise else where, but dont knock mine

I have lived here for 45 years and seen a lot of people move out of state but they seem to come back. I don't plan on ever moving except maybe north one day. What gets me is some of these people have all the answers and whine all the time about Michigan, will tell you how great it is in other states, why are they still here? How do they know what its like out there if they're still here? I wish they would move to California as one said how great it is and add to they're foreclosure list as they seem to be ahead us and maybe get caught in a wildfire or mudslide and maybe a big earthquake sometime. Then they could have something to whine about.
Another post said nobody from surrounding states comes here; well according to this link there is quite a difference from what they say in their opinions. What I've always heard is Opinions are like(you know whats) everybody has one. I don't know why I even respond to this crap.

Hi. I have lived in Mi most of my life. I did just come from Ca,was in Fl and in NJ. I think all states have there pros and cons. I am not a cold weather person so that is an issue for me. Fl though was very humid like hard to breath. Ca I liked the weather but it amazed me at how expensive it is like unreal and how much the people work there to afford less of a place even. You spend more time traveling and even things like groceries. A lot of people who comment on the weather though make me wonder about the very popular cold and snowy states like New York and Chicago but people love it there. I often wonder if people move for the dream so to speak.
