Hi

i live in lansing and always want to go to country side, large wide plains and natural places. i guess UP has it all.

I was thinking for going to Mackinac Island and then head towards something natural nearby (not yet decided though).

Please let me know if this time will be good? I cant go on July long weekend, since my wife will be working.

Thanks for ur time.

If you are asking if this time of year is good, I would say it depends on how cold it is, and it can get quite cold this time of year. Being surrounded by water doesn't help. I went there once in June and froze my butt off.

I would say you may be ok these last few weeks of May. At worst...your looking at temps in the 50's which is not all that bad for the area in May, just dress accordingly. As far as natural beauty...its all around you up up that way. Go to the U.P...go anywhere up there... .just drive!

We did this a couple of years ago. We drove up friday night. We camped on the LP side and took the morning boat to the island. It was very nice. Surprisingly not very crowded either. On the way back it was rough and we were sitting at the top of the boat. We got soaked and it was cold. Suggestion - bring a rain coat or at least some garbage bags to make makeshift raincoats and hats. Also rent bicycles on the Island. Unless you have a load of extra money that is the best way to get around and it allow you the freedom to decide where to go and when.

If you camp bring warm sleeping bags and air mattersses or cots. It gets chilly at night.

On the second day, we went up to Taquamenon Falls. It was sunny and warm. We stopped on the way up there and bought some delicisious pasties for a picnic. You can wade out into the lower falls and pinic on an island or just sit right on one of the little waterfalls. We also went to a festival of some sort in Paradise. We hiked from the lower falls to the upper falls. It is a super terrific hike, but long and lots of climbing. Fortuantely some of our family did not want to hike so they drove to the upper falls and picked us up. The third day we just hung out at the campgrounds for the mroning and then drove back. It was a fabulous weekend and our kids still talk about it several years later.

Of course if it rains, none of this will be very fun.

One night we went to a little resturaunt on a hill in St. Ignance. The food was fantastic, the people were wonderful and we had a nice view. I cannot tell you the name of it. It is on the left side of the road as you go into St. Ignance from the bridge, it is up a steep hill and I thin it is a family owned and operated place. Great food.

If you are considering going up during Memorial Day weekend be prepared for just about the second (or third) busiest time of year up there! I LOVE it, but some people don't like crowds. That time of year brings a lot of events and beautiful flowers! the Fort Michilimackinac pageant is quite the free show!

Whenever you do go, Tahquamenon Falls is very close and Paradise is a great little village famous for blueberries (not in may though ) Keep driving a bit north and you will be at Whitefish point on Lake Superior! Everything coldjensens said about the falls is so true!

There is also a lot of wonderful natural beauty on the island, go exploring away from the main street!

Enjoy if you go!

YEs. GO see the arch thingy. It is pretty neat and there ar enice views from there. Stop along the bike trails on the back side of the island and walk down to the beach. It is nicer than being in or near town. .
