Hello :
I am going to study in MTU this fall.
I do not know there at all and I intend to buy a cheap house there (hate renting). I am a single 33 years old guy and looking for some kind of work too (technical field).
So, Please help me with your ideas regarding a good place to settle down.

I live near Houghton and I can tell you that you won't find any cheap houses near Tech. They are all owned by landlords and rented to students. If you are willing to drive a little some can be found 10-20 miles away. Be careful though, most are in rough shape and can be money pits. If they are not weather tight the heating cost in the winter will eat you alive. Stay away from those big old mining houses.
With some careful shopping and luck you may find something. It would also help if I knew what you mean by 'cheap'.

I just did a search on Realtor.com for houses in Houghton between $30-65K (went a little above assuming you can bargain them down) and it came up with three results:

47582 First St. (http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/47582-First-St_Houghton_MI_49931_1110387695 - broken link) - $62,000 - If the map is accurate, this house is within walking distance of MTU.
47824 N. Main St. (http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/47824-N-Main-St_Houghton_MI_49931_1110453630 - broken link) - $61,000 - If MapQuest is right, this house is a little south of town but easily within driving distance.
17007 Chassell-Painesdale Rd. (http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/17007-Chassell-Painesdale-Rd_Houghton_MI_49931_1109340468 - broken link) - $64,900 - A bit further south, but on five acres and the photos of the interior look really nice.

No, I don't know the cost for utility bills in Houghton. I live in Marquette, about 90 miles away from Houghton, so they're probably pretty comparable. My bills here tend to be $40/month for electric (with three other people living in my house, so that's pretty cheap), water bill is about $80/month during normal usage (this coming month will be a LOT higher as I've been replanting my lawn and having to run the sprinkler a lot), and my heat/natural gas bill ranges from $50 in summer to near $300 in winter (which is typical).

I finished my graduate studies at MTU in 05. Many students buy houses in Hancock. Property is cheaper there but still within a 15-minute drive to campus. Houses in Calumet are even cheaper, but if you buy a house there, you might not be able to sell it when you graduate.

You say you also want to find work there. Professional jobs are not easy to find in the UP. You may be able to get a job on campus while you are a student (or an assistantship if you are going to graduate school), but you will probably have to leave the area to find work after you graduate.

you are very helpful SpaceGhost79.I have a good estimation about the bills now. Thanks a lot.
By the way 300$ a month for gas in winter is huge. Here in Tehran we pay about 150$ every other month for 16 apartment units in winter.although these two places are not comparable at all in winter.

I am very happy to find a former student of MTU here. That was a great advice,I do not want to buy a house that remains mine forever!
I am going to study EE and I know about the tuition there, but I need to know about monthly payment of tuition(If possible) and average cost of living. And does MTU have a nice gym and is there a nice peaceful bar there

MTU does have a nice gym. I believe it's less than 10 years old. For a bar, most of the grad students I know like Keweenaw Brewing Company. For tuition payment plans, look at MTU's website or talk to one of their admissions counselors for up-to-date info.
