More than 40 years after her family was forced from their home because they were black, Sallie Sanders received the keys to a new house built to settle one of the longest-running cases of housing discrimination in the United States.

Decades later, small Michigan city builds homes to atone for discrimination against blacks - 1/18/2010 4:38:23 PM | Newser

I saw this on the news last night. That lady seems really sweet, and the house is gorgeous. Anything that brings beautiful, new housing to Hamtramck, I'm all for. Now if only Detroit could follow suit.

They agreed to do this back in 1980 and it is just now happening? Took them long enough, don't you think?

No, just build some new, beautiful homes for anyone of any ethnic group, preferably in the place of some of the dilapidated, abandoned houses that are there now.

What about the townhouses on Woodward across from the fox?

The renovated lofts around Wayne State?

New developments on east side, Virginia Park, and others?

Why is it the city's responsibility to build housing?

Is there another reason folks like PULTE, TOLL BROTHERS and CENTEX have not built on large scale in the city limits?

Same reason that there is NOT a Kroger or another major grocery chain in the city limits?

There is a reason these businesses are well outside the boundaries of Detroit.

And NO, being on 8 mile DOES NOT count as being IN Detroit...

Oh, okay, I see your point and you're right. It is not the city's responsibility at all, except for in this Hamtramck case, since a judge ruled it be done. I meant that I wish that SOMEONE would build some new housing in Detroit to replace some of the junk property that fills it now. I realize that it's a tall order, but a person can dream, right?

We have been "dreaming" for nearly 40 years!

Dream a little dream with me.../?/
