I don't know about best, since all the places we've been stationed have sucked! BUT I think as long as you're far away from Jacksonville, you'll be alright = ]

NAS Jax and the area around it, really has depreciated over the years. I was stationed at NAS Cecil Field before it closed and enjoyed the area then. Visited the area earlier this year and I would not move there if I had a choice.

Default Sigonella by Far the Best, IF you are not a whimp.

everything you and your family could wish for is in Sigonella. especially a really great High School. Culture, Beaches, Sports, night Life, History, travel and great host nation relation. It is so good that I am now breaking the Sigonella Creed and am now marked for death.
The Sigonella Creed is easy. If/when you leave you are required to tell everyone you meet how aweful it is there. Why? So that the folks there can keep requesting extensions and getting approved, forever.

When I was stationed overseas, all my coworkers took their annual leave and flew back to the states. I never understood that mentality. You are already in Europe. They have a great rail system. Go explore somewhere new. Those big macs will be there when you transfer back.

OP, I know you expressed a preference to stay in the States, but I have to put in a plug for Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan. I was lucky enough to be there for several months on TDY. I loved it.

I was also at Chinhae Naval Base in South Korea. Nice, but a little isolated.

Good luck.

Besides hijacking the thread, I'm not sure joining the Navy at a later age, with a wife and 3 kids, is a good idea. Sure, it will probably be easy enough to get San Diego as a home port, but the cost-of-living out there is absurd, and hubby won't be making much until he hits at least grade E4. Plus he will be away much of the time. On the other hand, you will have medical care, subsistence allowance and housing allowance on top of his base pay.

Has a recruiter actually told him he is a viable enlistee with 4 dependents??

Assuming that the husband would be entering as an enlisted Sailor, I'd agree with you. All good points.

Damn, having replied a couple hours ago, I just realized this is an 11 year old thread. A poster resurrected it yesterday for some strange reason.

You know, it is rather interesting that Sigonella could be so fantastic..........and then there is Augusta Bay. But then again....then there is Taormina.
