Hello,
I would love to speak with anyone who is an internment specialist in the army or knows a bit about it. Basically, I'm just wanting to know what the most common location assignments are for army prison guards and what it is like in this position. Please give me any information you have. I believe that the army operates most prisons stateside but I'm not sure. Do many internment specialists work in iraq or afghanistan?

Thanks!

My hubby was a 95C/31E from 1988-2008. He Retired as a 1SG and ran two IDFs before his Retirement. He was Deployed twice- once in DS and once in OIF. This may have been due to his Rank at the time, but we have found that most of our friends have only Deployed once or twice during OIF.

The Duty Stations here are Ft. Lewis, Wa, Ft. Sill, OK, Ft. Leavenworth, KS (Ft. Knox, Ky is no longer in operation). OCONUS has Mannheim, Germany and ? Korea (I forget the Camp since my DH was there in 91) as well as the possibility to Deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan as either 31E OR 31Bs sometimes the Army will call on Bs and Es to serve in each other's field since they are both MPs).

You can also go to Cuba as a31E. FT Sill is supposed to be closing their RCF soon, too. There have not been that many deployments here out of FT Leavenworth, and many of those who were deployed went on a voluntary basis. This has been the only duty station for many of the soldiers here, as this base houses the USDB and just added a regional correction facility. The other bases only have regional correction facilities. A grand majority of the deployments have been to Afghanistan as of late. 31B's do get put into 31E units. My husband is a 31B and he's in a 31E unit here. If you're looking for a more stable work life, few deployments and plenty of family time, 31E is a good option of MOS's. If you're looking to travel frequently, see the world, deploy a lot and enjoy combat operations, it won't be a good fit.

Anyone wanting to join the 31E mos....think long and hard. Let me give you a quick rundown...you work...alot! You go home almost every night, but you are at the prison/jail more then you are not. After 6 years in the army, I have probably served more time in prison then most of the prisoners there. It is not for those who are not dedicated to the purpose. The rewards are great. I made SSG in a little over 5 years, which in any other MOS is unheard of. I have been in charge of entire shifts and run detainee camps downrange. Oh, and you have to have thick skin. You get called alot of things in jail, and there isnt a damn thing you can do about it. There arent any baton beatings or crap like that. You typically go in unarmed with around 80 prisoners all around you....by yourself. But hey, if you think you can hang, try it out!

My son is a 31E with a 3 year 0 month contract. The Army is no longer extending contracts. He went to JTF GTMO in Cuba after BCT and AIT From 10/10 to 10/11. From there he is now being assigned to Forth Leavenworth in Kansas. He is not sure how long he will be there. He has 18 months to go this X-Mass. Because there is not an even amount of time left to do another 2 full years how do you think he will spend the rest of his time in the service?

He'll probably stay at Leavenworth until he ETS's.

That is great news! Respectfully, What are you basing your opinion on. We are hearing rumors of 9 month deployments to Afghanistan with rotations of 31E's alternating between Fort Lewis and Fort Leavenworth. Fort Leavenworth allegedly just left and my son told me that they would need his permission to deploy because he is coming back from an overseas tour in 3 weeks. I have no military background.

I'm a mid career soldier. I'm pretty familiar with how the Army operates, but I'm not an expert on assignments. Take my words as an educated guess.

If your son's time in GITMO counts as a deployment, which I'm pretty sure it does, then he has accumulated what we call "dwell time." That's what he means by they can't deploy him without asking his permission. He would have to waive his dwell time. If he doesn't, chances are he's not going to be tapped for a deployment for at least a year. After that time, he will more than likely not be deployed because he will be too close to his ETS. The Army used to "stop loss" soldiers, which means, they'd just extend their contract to meet the requirements of the deployment, but they're not doing that anymore.

Chances are, he's going to do his time at Leavenworth and then get out if he opts not to reenlist. The thing about the Army though is that nothing is guaranteed, and policies change all the time. You have to be flexible or else you'll lose your mind. All I can say is that the trend now is toward fewer deployments and longer dwell times, so this is working in your son's favor if his goal is to not deploy again.

Your son's best source of information is a senior NCO in his MOS. He should find one he likes and trusts, and that person should be able to give him a pretty good guess about the probability of him deploying based on knowledge of needs of the Army for his particular MOS and past trends.

Just a follow up. My son, a 31E, made Sergeant in just under two years from his original enlistment date. His dwell time is up this Halloween, and he has just over a year to go before he seperates from the service. He is still stationed at Leavenworth. He has no regrets and says the officers and enlisted personnel there have been very good to him. His brother is going to basic as a 31E in June.
