I don't believe Abu's is still open.

I would look to Casablanca on Brady, Shiraz on Oakland, or Shahrazad on Oakland. There's also another place on the corner of Royal & Farwell that I've walked by a bunch of times... always people there but I don't know the name.

Isn't that just a coffee/bakery shop? I walk by it all the time and cannot remember it either.

The place on Royal and Farwell is called Sphinx (1751 N. Farwell Ave.)--it's a tiny place that sells Turkish/Middle Eastern pastry, coffee, other beverages, and hookahs/hookah-related wares. It's pretty good--they usually have different kinds of baklava, kataifi, spinach pie, meat pies, turkish coffee, and other treats.

I think it's owned by the people from Mona's (1814 N. Farwell Ave.), which is across the street. Great shwarma and other foods, including a small line-up of baklava and other pastries.

In the Third Ward there's a Turkish restaurant called Tulip (360 E. Erie St.). I've only been there a couple of times, with the last visit being a few years ago. It was fine, I thought, but not amazing. I know people who've gone recently and have mixed reviews of the place--some dishes are hits, others are misses, and the service seems spotty.

Of the other East Side Middle Eastern restaurants (Shiraz, Casablanca, Shahrazad), Shahrazad (2847 N. Oakland Ave.) has the best pastry selection--they have a glass case/counter at the register with several kinds of pastry. I also think Shahrazad has the most diverse menu of the the various Middle Eastern places I've tried--not just the usual falafel, hummus, kabobs, and such.

You may want to check out some Middle Eastern markets for even better selections. There's a Jordanian restaurant named Nablus and an adjacent Middle Eastern market at 845 W. Layton Ave., in a little strip mall. The area is Milwaukee's far south side.

The best Middle Eastern market is probably Holy Land Grocery and Bakery (2755 W. Ramsey Ave.). As the name indicates, you'll find an assortment of pastry and other sweets there. They also have savory treats such as falafel sandwiches. This is also located on the far south side--in fact, it may be officially in Oak Creek; not sure.

Abu's - CLOSED - Milwaukee, WI

Last comment was February of this year. So it was either late last year or the beginning of this year. I remember being surprised when I walked past it right after it closed.
