Good news, Milwaukee has found a niche to differentiate itself from other rust belt/Great Lakes cities!

I read this yesterday and I needed time to reflect on this. My response is a mixture of hope and cynicism. I hope this happens because it could really do for Milwaukee what the computer industry did for the Bay Area in California. On the other hand, there are still many people who once worked in unskilled labor and are now unemployed. One thing mentioned was the African-American male unemployment rate was at 50 percent or more. I don't know if that is for certain. However, it leaves alot to be desired, such as jobs.

I'm happy that Veolia chose Milwaukee as the place for relocation. It can be a boost for Milwaukee. At the same time, there are still many problems that need to be solved at the micro-levels as well.

Great for R&D but I don't think this will result in hundreds of job or thousands. I just don't see it translating into private sector jobs but still a plus and a positive for Milwaukee.

What do you think will bring solid jobs to Milwaukee? From your perspective.

It really is about what kind of jobs. If you bring tons of research & development jobs to the metro that's good. However, you'll only directly benefit from this if you have a bachelor or advanced degree.

The 'problem' (to anyone, don't read race into that) population is generally lacking even a high school degree. There aren't alot of good jobs for those qualifications.

So, is there anything that the metro can do, to bring lots of high-paying but low-education jobs? No.

Can we get people to improve their education & make them eligible for better paying jobs? Maybe, but obviously the metro has been failing at that.

Can we get these people to places where labor is in high demand, regardless of education? Maybe, but I doubt many people will want to move to North Dakota.
