California has semi-arid climate and shortage of water, and too many crazies. And when we speak of California, we assume LA, SF, and other big cities there, where 80% of population lives.

This is why our son (who has lived in LA area for a decade) dislikes going to WI where he was raised and grew up.

There are so many folks who have never been to CA, (or even left midwest for that matter) who feel it is their role to advise him as to why he should not like living in California. He laughs it off - but I get where he is coming from.

I lived in Los Angeles for a while. And I am not advising your son what he should like or dislike. Just expressing my opinion for all participants of this forum.

Heck, I loved living in San Francisco, and for a part of that time I lived right across the PCH from the beach, but it wasn't sustainable long-term due to the crazy cost of living. I understand why people like it there, but it wasn't for me.

To each his/her own.

Not without lots of irrigation. I'm fairly certain the naturally fertile eastern half of the country could continue to grow enough edible food without California's help if it came to that. I hope it doesn't because I do like my almonds.
For most of human history, people just ate what was available close to them, they didn't rely on out-of-season or non-native stuff to be brought in on a truck.

As for the thread I'm partial to traditional, walkable neighborhoods like Whitefish Bay especially in Wisconsin because that's what the locals are best at building.
I've never been overly impressed with Wisconsin attempts at car-centric developments. That's not a bad thing especially considering how the locals drive.
