Christ. Just go down to First Avenue north any given night. There's even the odd shooting if that makes it even more exciting for you.

Actually, I know a TON of former New Yorkers in Minneapolis. Not to mention all the people who have lived in New York temporarily. Of COURSE it's not NYC -- that's obvious. But for a city of its size, it does have a lot to offer.

And given that our rent is more than $1200 more a month in NYC (and our rent was about the same in San Francisco; the price difference wasn't SO different than LA -- about $500) for a much smaller space ( for an apartment that was considered a huge "bargain") -- you really can't discount the financial benefits. One benefit about Minneapolis is that it's much easier to be able to go out and afford things like eating out at nice restaurants, traveling (including to lots of big cities), etc. Sure, you give up things in return. It's quieter in Minneapolis, it's tougher to live without a car, it's obviously not Manhattan. But it's not like you're living in the boonies, either. There are excellent restaurants (whether or not you like them, there are plenty of them, and the city these days does have a national reputation for being good for foodies), there's a lot to do, there's a great cultural scene, etc. etc. So no, of course it's no international megacity, but it's hardly some small town, either. It's still a big city, just not the biggest.

Well, if you get tired of the "small town life" in Minneapolis, one could easily just go across the river or whatever to St. Paul as everyone knows that's where the action is. Duh!
Who needs NYC, Philli or the Big Easy when you have St. Peasey!

Just as a point of reference - I've lived in Mpls or St Paul for over 30 years and never seen a gun pulled in anger. I'm not saying it never happens - I live in N Mpls and hear gunfire occasionally - but if you aren't a gangster or the spouse of a drunken hubby with anger management issues, your main safety concern will come from the fast food clogging your arteries, long before gun play is an issue.

Remember a couple years back when that innocent dude got caught in a crossfire and died after being shot. Happened around 5th Street and 1st Ave North?

Doesn't happen often but once in a while people are at the wrong place at the wrong time and get hit by stray bullets.

But that happens anywhere (well, anywhere that people want be at least). I remember visiting an upscale bar in Georgetown (Washington DC) where a shooting had occurred the previous evening. The Congressmen and lobbyists kept coming there anyhow. The bar just hosed off the sidewalks and put the Tiki lamps out, and everything was just as before.
