I was going to suggest Muddy Waters but I see someone else already did!

Muddy Waters is now a bar and restaurant in Lynlake, I'm not sure if the vibe has changed.

That kind of sucks, I had it on my list as places to visit. Peace Coffee seems like a cool place to and I don't know if it's still there but I heard something about a place called Common Roots.

Hard Time Cafe is one spot I know (be prepared to smell a like the cafe if you sit there longer then half hour though ) and there used to be a co-op natural/organic grocery store (no longer open) one block over.

As some people have mentioned Seward neighborhood, have them as well. One place comes to mind is Half moon coffee shop on Franklin Ave.

Lake St. & Bryant (close to where Lake St. splits into fork, lake and Lagoon) has couple of places; Bryant-lake bowl and right across street (lake st.) Dunn Bros coffee shop.

Although I am not a hippie, I kindda like their carefree/unmaterialistic view of life. I love seeing those old but well cared for Volvos too.

With all due respect, hippies don't frequent Muddy Waters, Bryant Lake Bowl or the Uptown scene. That's a "hipster" scene. They might ride bikes, but they're not hippies. Cedar Riverside, Seward, Longfellow, NE Mpls are all right next to the U of M so you get a lot of hippie students in those areas i.e. cheap rents, good bus/train service, etc.....that's where I'd look if you want dreads, tie dyes & peace lovers.

Isn't Uptown considered a "hipster" place? Might want to check there, because that's the only place I've noticed them.

In the blocks surrounding Powderhorn Park we regularly see a Volkswagen minibus completely covered in artificial turf....can't get much more hippy than that. There is also a minivan with an exterior completely covered in toys and another vehicle completely covered in seashells. All of this is pretty hippy in my opinion.

The distinction in my mind is....hippies drink cheap wine, ride old beat up bicycles they bought at a garage sale for $10, or drives an old beater & are anti-war. Hipsters drink expensive micro-brews, ride a $2,000 bicycles, drive brand new Prius/Suburu's & supports wars as long as the Democrats are in office.

Lyn-Lake area certainly has its share of former hippies, as well as a good dose of the kind of people the OP is looking for. They are simply mixed in with the hipsters. Check out portions of Whittier neighborhood. The whole stretch of Lyndale between Franklin and Lake is a good place to start. And as suggested, join the Wedge co-op; these days it has a bigger blend of customers (pretty much everyone from all walks of life shop at at co-ops in Minneapolis), but it's still worth a visit. They are one of the co-ops that's still around (and bigger than ever) from the days when Minneapolis was home to the "co-op wars." Powderhorn and points east probably have more true hippies, but I think that stretch of Lyndale probably has more of the kind of specific culture or social scene that the OP is seeking. I'd definitely spend time all over south Minneapolis, though. Minneapolis is overflowing with free trade coffee-swilling bike-riding vegans. (not sure if the OP is into biking, but if not, he or she should consider it.)
