I sure do miss Porky's Drive-In. Anyone else want a Twin Burger?

My friend in Texas (he's from here) recently said he's craving a burger from there, he was sad when I told him it's gone. Vanilla shakes and feeding the birds french fries during lunch along with all the car fun on weekends! Now it's the monthly coffee and cars at condos for cars which I like much more.

Kind of like drive-in movies, it's too bad that all the people that don't wax nostalgic about places like Porky's didn't continue to patronize them during there later lean years, or maybe they just weren't that much worth saving after all.

My favorite was the fish sandwich. With an onion ring on top.

Business at Porky's was good. The problem was with the new Light Rail Transit line going down the middle of University Avenue. Three years of construction as well as major overhaul of the street and neighborhood is what did Porky's in.

They tried to relocate to Central Avenue NE, but the nostalgia just wasn't the same.

So true. University Avenue is being transformed from a place to GO and BE to a place to pass through and with some caution, to cross over.

Porky's may be gone, but there's still a huge load of food places. One of my favorite is at University and Dale. But things like the fish and pork sandwiches, I'm not sure where you go now.

University and Dale? You mean Wendy's? I prefer White Castle on Rice and Uni.

Nope. Big Daddy's Barbecue. Wendy's? I'm no snob. I eat Wendy's in Bellingham Washington where it is walking distance for the Motel 6. But hardly ever in Minnesota. So many options I know here.

I dislike reading that light rail did them in. They sold out right as construction was getting underway. Kinda weird that a business would sell out just as their getting new sidewalks, repaved roads, trees, planters, streetlamps, etc, right next to their business. You'd think those sort of improvements would be more beneficial than a hindrance. Sure there is construction and it can seem like it's lasting forever. But it doesn't. Today the streets and sidewalks along Uni look the best they've been in 20 or 30 years.

And I'm not gonna feel too sorry for them leaving. They were paid nearly a million dollars for their building and land.

I can accept their reasoning that their establishment didn't quite fit in with the decor of a major mass transit way. That's their opinion and their choice to sell. University Ave is going to be completely remade over the next generation or so.

But I don't want to hear light rail "did them in". They got an offer they couldn't say "No" to.
