My husband has the possibility of getting a job as a hotel assistant manager in Eagan. We will be renting and we have a daughter in 1st grade so we want a safe area but one that isn't too expensive. Rent around here is between 650-1000. We would like to stay under that if possible. Commuting is okay as long as it isn't over 30 minutes but less would be better. Any suggestions ?

Thank you!

Stephanie

There are several nice complexes in Eagan around Lexington and Yankee Doodle Road. You aren't going to find anything under $1000 though and the difference could be made up from not having to drive far to work. You might find something around $1000 in Hastings. You can buy a townhome in the Eagan area and have a payment less than $1000/month too--but not sure you are ready for that.

Avoid the western side of Eagan in the Burnsville/Savage district. Anything in Apple Valley, Rosemount, Hastings will put you into good schools.

I am her husband, and I think a better question is.

If I am working in Eagan and not wanting to commute more than 20 minutes one way, what are some out lying areas to consider looking for houses, duplexes or apartments, and where can we get the best bang for our buck. Plus have good schools for our first grader?

Thanks

For all feedback

Hastings is probably going to be your best bet.....but again, renting is pretty expensive in the Twin Cities Metro and to find an apartment for $600 that you would actually want to live in, you are looking an hour plus away from Eagan.

I would second the Hastings and Farmington suggestions. In addition, I would also look at Northfield along with the Elko New Market area along I-35 in the desireable Lakeville ISD #194 school district. Check into Shakopee as well.

I wouldn't totally rule out some communities across the St. Croix River in Western Wisconsin such as: Hudson or River Falls; there you may be able to locate a rental under $1,000 a month.

Best of luck!

That's a long haul from across the river though--gas might end up costing more.

Depending where you would live in Hastings and where you are working in Eagan, the commute could be closer to 30 minutes than 20. Probably still worth looking into, just something to keep in mind.
