I could be looking at a job offer from a company in St Paul. Would be moving from the Hilliard Ohio area. My first concerns would be the traffic and cost of living which, from initial research, seem to be high in that area. Are there affordable neighborhoods within 20 miles or so with a decent commute? Any thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks in advance
Gerry

You will have to define affordable since it is different for everyone. Depending on where in St. Paul you will be there are a lot of great areas in the Twin Cities. Do you have kids, what are your interests, etc.

Well I'm paying 7K a year in property taxes here in Ohio and I've heard rom some folks that the cost of living in general is higher in the St Paul area than it is in the Hilliard-Dublin Ohio area of Columbus. Also told that traffic is bad into St Paul and the commutes tend to be long. The company I'm talking with also has a spot open in Brookfield WI. Might have to look into that.
Thanks

Well, your property taxes are almost double mine. We live in the suburbs and have a 3500 sq foot home if that helps. I am going to take a stab that the company is possibly 3M. If so, you could live in several areas with fairly reasonable prices for the Twin Cities area, much LESS in property taxes at least and have a 5-10 minute commute. Again, it really depends on WHERE the job is. My husband has a 15-20 minute commute for a 14 mile trip, that is pretty good I think. Now, if you live in say Maple Grove and commute to Bloomington, opposites sides of the Twin Cities, you will have an hour commute to drive 40 miles.

I did a quick search on realtor.com to compare housing prices and I think you will find similar prices for similar house sizes in the eastern/southern suburbs of the Twin Cities. I would say the the Twin Cities houses are probably a bit higher $10,000-30,000 but with the savings in property taxes, puts them in a similar price range.

I should add as well, we live in the best school district in the state and one of the top school districts in the Nation. You will also find the 90% of the school districts in the suburbs to be superior schools so that is worth something if you have children.

Right now I would have to say that St Paul is the place to be in the Twin Cities area. I have been impressed with a number of things that St Paul is doing to improve the quality of life in many ways.

My brother lives a couple of blocks away from Grand Ave and he loves it there. I also have a friend who just recently moved from a house in North St. Paul off of Rice Street near Arlington High School. Definitely a bit on the rough side, very blue collar with smaller homes. Every bar up and down Rice street is filled with your typical blue collar folk. I actually don't mind the area. His neighbors were pretty cool. I recall one night where his neighbors came over and we had a bonfire in his back yard and everybody was grabbing whatever they could to burn, couches, treehouses, etc....good times .
