  • The National Average of violent crimes is 3.8 per 1,000 people.
  • Minnesota is lower than the national average at 2.43 per 1,000 people.
  • What drives the number for all of Minnesota to even be that high, is the extremely crime rate in Minneapolis itself. It's higher than the national average: 10.73 per 1,000 people. That's higher than St. Paul (which isn't much better) at "only" 7.12 per 1,000 people.
  • Minneapolis is ranked 5 (100 is safest) on the Crime Index. This means that Minneapolis is safer than only 5% of U.S. cities. (St. Paul ranks 10.)

This is according to Neighborhood Scout, which is a non-biased, statistics-only driven source.

Minnesota having a violent crime rate at 2.43 per 1,000 people when the national average is 3.8 per 1,000 people is good news. By all means it is wise to try to get it even lower, but any reasonable person will still conclude it is positive news for the state.

Morgan Quitno ranks cities and metro areas for crime. Morgan Quitno Press

Minneapolis and St. Paul do not appear on any of their most dangerous cities lists. Detroit, St. Louis, Memphis, Flint, MI, Gary, IN, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Dallas do appear on the list. The Twin Cities metro does not appear on their most dangerous metro areas list.

I was going to say something of the sort, but you said it better than I could have.
Just this morning, in the news AGAIN, someone shot in Minneapolis.
St. Paul is getting real bad too.

giving the crime rate of a state is about as meaningful as giving the average height of students in a K-12 school district.

I shall try to remain as one of the 997.57 while in Sebeka and one of the 989.27 while in Minneapolis. Should be easy enough.

Not that simple!

Sebeka is so tiny there are no statistics but there are statistics for tiny Wadena County.

Of the 10 major crime categories, Wadena County ranks well below the national average.

Minneapolis ranks above the national average.

( yes, this is crimes per 1,000 also )

They are not considered reputable by crackpots.

Indianapolis and Seattle are both ranked '3' on the Crime Index. All cities have a relatively higher crime rate than cornfields (ummm...duh). All cities will have a crime rate higher than the national average (ummm...duh).

None of that changes the fact that the Minnesota crime rate is now at a 50 year low, nor does it change the fact that Minneapolis' crime rate has been rising for 5 years...but is still 14% below its 15-year average.

Violent crime up in Minneapolis for the fifth year in a row - StarTribune.com

Nor does it change the fact that the crime rate only 'edged up' in 2016 from it's 2015 rate 14% below its 15-year average.

Minneapolis violent crime edged up in 2016, stats show - StarTribune.com

In any case, none of that addresses the actual subject of my post- Minnesota's crime rate. I'm not sure which dim bulb thought I was citing Minnesota's crime rate to talk about Minneapolis' but we'll let that dead end fall by the wayside.

Given Minnesota's 50-year low in crime rate, the overheated rhetoric about crime used by some politicians is pretty clearly an effort to corral sheep that are easy to scare.

A state crime rate ?

About as useless as the Gophers giving the average weight of their football team.

The average weight of their offensive line ?............meaningful

The average weight of their football team ?............meaningless
