Is driving up river something you want to do? Otherwise hwy 90 is a faster route back to Idaho. The protesting is WAY down. Being a blue state, nobody wants the idiot feds coming here like they have in Portland.

There is construction on I-94. Both directions were closed in St Paul last weekend and now there’s going to be an eastbound closure this weekend.

Here’s a link for closure updates regarding the project.

35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown - MnDOT

Wow, that does look like a S-show. Thanks. Might just have to do I90 again, much as I'd like something different.

That’s not a freeway you would take. On the same link says I-94 is all lanes open.

Yeah, when I went to work this past Sunday, it was a mess. One of the links on that project page indicates there’s going to be a westbound closure next weekend, Aug 7th.

Yes, it is all open; however, it is during the weekend when the closures are happening. The link I provided is the project homepage, on that page there are links titled “I-94: westbound”...those links indicate there is going to be a portion closed for the weekend of Aug 7th, then another westbound portion will be closed Aug 14th.

This is good info for the OP but he doesn’t have to take I-90. Instead he can simply take 694 around the cities as was originally suggested and as most cross country travelers do. Seeing downtown of St Paul and Minneapolis from a freeway is not that big of a thrill.

Yeah, I was looking more closely at Google Maps and saw that. Planning on that route now. I'm really looking forward to running along the river from La Crosse to Minneapolis, looks like it might be a fun route. Planning on jumping off 94 in Glendive, MT and running some 2-lane for a while. Either way (94 or 90) there is a few hundred miles of empty landscape to grind out before getting anywhere pretty again.

My wife grew up on a farm and on our drives across SD and ND, she has pointed things out to me about the land, crops, animals, and farm buildings that otherwise would have completely escaped me. The Dakotas have a different kind of beauty that can really be appreciated and, if you look for it, you can see subtle but wonderful changes in the landscape.

I hope you have a good trip. This has been one of the better threads here in a while. Thank you.
