I'm fairly new to the area, and very new to St. Paul. I am looking at an apartment near downtown and right by the Cathedral, but I have some concerns over the safety of the neighborhood. Is it a safe one or is it sketchy? I'm having no luck finding crime info because I'm not even sure what the neighborhood is called (Cathedral Hill, maybe?). Please help!

Yes, that is the Cathedral Hill/Summit area. It is fairly safe down Summit. Across the highway toward the Capital isn't such a nice area though.

The Thomas-Dale neighborhood is one of the two areas in St. Paul where I would be hesitant to live in at this point. That isn't to say that this area isn't improving or that it won't be an attractive place to live in the long-term. Just be cautious if you're looking in this area. The area I'm talking about is north of University Ave, west of 35E, east of Lexington Ave, and south of the railroad tracks. As golfgal mentioned, it is nice if you're on the south side of interstate 94.

I go to school at Saint Paul College (right next to the cathedral). It appears to be a nice area to live in. There seem to be a lot of young professionals living in that area.
