I just moved to the Twin Cities and after blowing some money at Kowalski's and Whole Foods on Grand Avenue, I finally discovered where you hide the SUPERMARKETS!!!

Which of the two are generally cheaper?

They are pretty much the same, just different things on sale each week. In a perfect world, you can easily shop both to take advantage of every good price. Don't forget Super Target though, as it will almost always beat Cub and Rainbow on prices. Some stuff might be occasionally cheaper at Cub or Rainbow, but in the long run, you'll come out ahead at Target. Target does not have a "real" meat department though, so if you want an actual good piece of steak or something, go elsewhere. I'd recommend Lunds or Byerlys for that--Delicious dry aged steak.

I agree with SoKak11; they're about the same, with the difference mostly coming in the sales. I'd just go wherever is more convenient to your place.

You could also try pricing out at both stores whatever basic staples you buy most often and see if there's a clear winner based on your own personal buying patterns.

Thanks guys! I always figured that Target would cost more than Rainbow or Cub so I avoided it. Thanks for the tip! I do really like the fuel discount that Rainbow offers. I joined the "fuel perks club" when I went there today!

Target does have some good deals, though. Their "generic" brand (Market Pantry) is the best out of the big stores around here. But yeah, for good fresh meat/veg, you're gonna have to gonna have to go elsewhere due to their resistance to hiring union members in most locations.

As for Cub vs Rainbow, I prefer Rainbow. The prices are about the same but Rainbow has better service and their stores seem to be less cluttered/chaotic. The Cub on 60th and Nicollet is the worst grocery store I've been to in the cities.

Yup, you would go broke fast if you did all of your shopping at Kowalskis and Whole Foods. I go to these 2 stores for a few things, never all the shopping.

Please give your reasons why? I shop there and don't find it to be bad at all.

I agree about Super Target. I just picked up our favorite juice concentrate for $1.59 on sale at Rainbow, yet their regular price at Target is $1.09!!! So, there's something going on over at SuperTarget and I like it! ;-)
