I've heard about the expensive housing in the Twin Cities, but I've been looking on realtor.com and have found like three hundred single family homes in St. Paul alone for under 150k. Some of them based on the outside and interior pictures (those that have interior pics anyway) look really nice, like they've been kept up well and are in great condition. They're "our style" too--the older-looking type home with the enclosed porch (something you don't see where I live) and hardwood floors. (I must add that we have very little requirements as far as space, 2-bd minimum.) So what's with all the talk about not being able to afford a SFH in the twin cities? Is the Phalen lake area of St. Paul really bad or something (that's where I saw a couple of the homes)? Because the homes look so cute. I can't imagine that these well-kept houses would be in crime-ridden areas.

Phalen's right on the edge. Some nice little pockets, but bordering many not-so-nice areas. Check out West, South and North St Paul for the kinds of houses you are talking about for $150k. Also, some quiet neighborhoods with those kinds of homes at $150k near Como Lake. I believe all of these areas are more stable than Phalen.

Check out the St Paul city website for crime maps. That will give you some more info in addition to what Ben shared.
