So, after much contemplating, I have chosen to go to BSU, starting the spring 2011 semester. I was deciding between anchorage, grand forks, nd, and Bemidji, Mn.
After being in Bemidji this past weekend for a campus tour, I decided that BSU was for me. So far, from my experience, the "Minnesota Nice", reputation is true.
I'm a little concerned about finding a job though, I have a misdemeanor possesion of marijuana conviction, about two years old. I don't use anymore, btw. Do you think most employers in town would look past this, to help a BSU student find work?

I hope you have a good time. My son is enjoying school there so far (after a week and a half).

Most job applications ask for felony convictions so you probably won't have an issue.

Bemidji is a cool town, along with Brainerd. You should have a fantastic time going to school there.

Most area lakes freeze over 4+ feet of ice so if you like to fish, snow ski, snomobile, sojourn (sp)??, cross country ski, drive on ice, ice skate, have bonfire, wind surf, hang out with friends, suntan, snowhoe, make an igloo,
go camping
geocaching
trail walking
walk a frozen bog walk for a long ways
star gaze
join outdoors club
snoshoe at midnight under full moon or no moon.
Then Bemidji will be a great place.

This doesn't apply specifically to Bemidji State, but to all college students. Don't sit around in your dorm room complaining there is nothing to do. There are a tremendous amount of campus activities and off campus things to do, try some of them. They might bore you, or you might like them. You never know.

Exactly. That's what's great about Universities. The opportunities are endless- If you go out of your way to make it fun. Don't just sit there

Thinking back... A few of the things I did (Especially in February and January and November, when nights in the dorms get a little long)

-- Butts and Guts (Good way to get in shape and meet girls)
-- Intramural Kickball, Dodgeball, Basketball, Ultimate Frisbee
-- Volunteer for Orgz
-- Attend Athletic Events
-- Cultural Events (Somali Event where I tried Somali food, and it was good!!)
-- Concerts Board (I got the chance to meet a lot of celebs and bands - Matt Nathanson(Come on Get Higher), Emerson Drive, Vanessa Carlton, Dashboard Confessional, Plain White Ts, Ludacris, Incubus, Maya Angelou, Kevin Smith, Jody Sweetin)
-- I got the opportunity to become good friends with individuals from Somalia, Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Wales, India, Pakistan, Iraq, and Tunisia. I have met and became friends with individuals from Twin Cities, Dakotas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa (roommate), Nebraska, Texas, California, New York City, Maine, Vermont and Canada.

Just take advantage of everything. Then the friends and school part will come easy
