I thought I read once that Minnesota has the greatest number of ash trees in the country.

They found an infestation for the first time in Wright County this past September.

Lake Superior definitely moderates the temperatures quite a bit. We are probably the warmest winter locale in northern Minnesota overall, but I think it has Minneapolis still beat by a couple of degrees despite the lake. "Over the hill", the winter lows are definitely less than Minneapolis. Duluth as a whole is geographically more prone to dips in the gulf stream allowing arctic air to hit.

About the possibility of -30F on Wednesday, one computer model is showing a low of -33F that day in the Cities, though it's the low-end outlier. Anyway, the article lists all the days historically when it has gotten as cold as -30F in the Cities. Last time? 02/02/1996, a day which I remember well. I believe the high in the metro that day was -17F, and I spent an extraordinarily unpleasant hour in a Bloomington parking lot under the hood of a car I owned at the time. That was also the day Minnesota recorded its all-time statewide low, -60F in Tower.

Here's the article:

My alternator went out today!

Good thing the mechanic in the local shop works 7 days week - he got 'er in there and out pronto (though set me back $400).

This week should be interesting in my line of work...

Even with the several inches we got last night, I'm not impressed this winter, Minnesnowta.

Now the subzero temps of last week and this week, on the other hand...I'll just go ahead and blame that on all of you Twin Cities folk who were scoffing at the 30 degree days we had earlier in the month.

I am still getting my daily walk dangit. Duluth is at least spared from worst of this polar vortex.
