Another good "back-roads" drive are the back roads around St. John's University-heck even the "front-roads, 94" is beautiful.

Explore the county roads going off to the North to get away from traffic (if any) along the North Shore on Hwy 61.

One of the better scenic drives that I know of (especially brilliant with maples in the fall) is a brief detour near Tofte to a road called "Heartbreak Ridge".

Taking The Grade from Finland to Grand Marais is well worth the drive if you’ve driven 61 enough to be annoyed. Has fun different inland scenery on a smooth gravel road you can easily get to whatever speed you feel comfortable at with all terrain tires. I feel terrible for anyone living close to it as they acquire nonstop gravel dust in through open windows unless they have fur trees making a natural fence. Bike riders on dried out roads are in for a good luck breathing upon meeting vehicles.
