In both sides of my family, a common event at wedding receptions is for the groomsmen to "steal the bride" or the bridesmaids to "steal the groom" for a little while (maybe 30 minutes to an hour?) away to a local bar.

This happened at most wedding receptions on both my mother's side of the family and my father's side of the family. The family is from the Duluth area, although their roots lie from western Minnesota to the U.P. They are descendants of immigrants from Scandinavia, Germany, Poland, and Ireland.

Yet I posted a poll in the Weddings forum asking whether or not posters were familiar with this tradition or not. They almost unequivocally responded in the negative, and some even questioned whether or not I was making up the tradition.

This, however, seems to be a regional tradition, with less dispersion than I thought.

So I wanted to do a poll in tbhe state of my origin: is taking the bride or groom out to the bar during the wedding reception a tradition that you've heard of?

I've heard of it but I don't recall it happening at a wedding I've been to. I heard of it when I moved to southern MN, no one has ever mentioned it in the cities. I had forgotten all about it until I read this.

Common in SW MN but I hadn't heard of it before moving there many years ago. I haven't heard of it done in the metro area but we haven't had many weddings in the past several years.

Yes this was a tradtion, I'm not sure if anyone still does it. I was stole and so was my husband, I've also been the "stealer" and witnessed other "thefts' it was super fun. We usually went to a local bar for a couple drinks and joking around.

I'm not from SW MN, it happened in MN in general.

It's happened at nearly every wedding I've been to. I'm sure it's fun for the wedding party, but it's generally been pretty irritating to everyone that attended the wedding and is waiting for their return so the reception can start. The quick dash to the bar for the wedding party always seems to turn into an hour or two.

Yep, I've seen it in central MN, usually involving a stop at the bar. My wife's friends stole her and went to Dairy Queen, instead. I know it was a real highlight for her, although, like supreme said, it did lead to an odd delay before the reception.

must be a local thing, never heard of it in eastern WI but they do plenty of drinking there. This occurs during the reception when people are sitting and waiting? Sounds like fun for the bride, not so for the people attending. Unless it was my son or daughter getting married, once it went beyond 30-45 minutes of waiting.... must be a small town thing.
