Are there any signature amateur athletic events in Minnesota? I'm wondering about anything that could compare to something like the Bix 7 or the Living History Farms Race or RAGBRAI (all in Iowa) or the Birkie (in Wisconsin). I'd prefer for something that has been around for at least 30 years or so. I'm not looking for the latest fad race. I'd also like something with a large number of participants (maybe at least 5,000). Bonus points for something that is outside of the Twin Cities.

What about a state olympic-style amateur contest? I'm thinking of something like the Iowa Games.

City of Lakes Loppet Ski Festival

U.S. Pond Hockey Championships

These are two that come right to mind.

I'm looking for something that I could get any group of people who are somewhat in shape to participate in. Something that isn't necessarily top flight competition (or even really competitive), but will draw a crowd from a number of states. Do these things just not exist in Minnesota? Is there no classic, quirky race in Mankato or St. Cloud or Brainerd or ...?

Grandma's Marathon could qualify, but a marathon seems like a daunting/dangerous task for people who aren't going to necessarily train that much.

If you are talking about running there are any number of road races around the state with varying levels of competitiveness . Try looking at Apple Raceberry Jam website for one spot.
