Not a myth. As Kayekaye also notes, there are bed bugs all over Minnesota.

I spent some time in West Central Minnesota, and got them into my futon mattress. The only way I got rid of them was by putting a bedbug-proof slip cover over the mattress, killing those inside (they can't get out to eat) and keeping any more from taking up residence inside.

I am also starving them by putting bed bug traps under the bed posts and filling the traps with Diatomaceous earth. I haven't had any bites since doing that. The bugs live in the walls and come out at night in response to heat and CO2 emissions. Humans are a source of both. It takes around 18 months to starve bed bugs to death (the adults) so this is a longterm project.

As for heat treatment, I had a former apartment landlord tell me that you can't treat one room at a time since the bugs will simply move through the walls to the untreated rooms.
